Alpha HPA has been featured in Create Digital for its breakthrough approach to producing ultra-high purity aluminium materials at scale – with significantly lower emissions and waste than conventional methods.

The article highlights Alpha HPA’s world-first hydrometallurgical process, developed and now being scaled at the company’s facility in Gladstone, Queensland. This new process refines aluminium hydrate feedstock into high-purity alumina (HPA) across 4N, 5N and 6N grades, achieving unmatched impurity control with uranium and thorium reduced to below one part per billion.

In addition to purity, Alpha’s process delivers key benefits for industry:

  • Sustainability – near-zero waste and a much lower carbon footprint compared to traditional alumina refining.

  • Scalability & cost efficiency – targeting annual production of 10,000 tonnes, with material costs set to be significantly lower than current benchmarks.

  • High-tech applications – including advanced semiconductors, safer and longer-lasting batteries, and thermal management for AI and data centre chips. Testing shows Alpha’s alumina delivers >50% higher removal rates in silicon carbide polishing compared with conventional abrasives.

Managing Director Rob Williamson told Create Digital: “We’ve re-engineered the process from the ground up to deliver unmatched purity at commercial scale, with near-zero waste and drastically lower emissions.”

Supported by major investment under the Australian Government’s Critical Minerals Strategy, Alpha HPA’s Gladstone facility is positioning Australia as a key supplier of the ultra-high purity aluminium materials needed for the global energy transition and digital economy.
