Alpha HPA has been spotlighted in Industry Queensland for its leadership in advancing safer, high-performance battery materials as global regulations tighten.
In response to new safety standards introduced by Chinese authorities aimed at reducing the risks of fire and explosion in batteries, Alpha HPA’s innovative alumina-based coating technology is gaining recognition for its potential to meet these challenges. The article highlights how Alpha’s Ultra Coat Process™ – designed for use on battery anodes and cathodes – has already achieved technical qualification with a major global anode manufacturer.
Alpha HPA’s proprietary high-purity alumina coatings have demonstrated a significant reduction in thermal runaway risks, with testing showing up to 100% improvement when applied to graphite anodes. Additional benefits include improved thermal propagation resistance in cell casings, enhanced battery safety, longer cycle life and reduced first-cycle lithium loss.
Managing Director Rob Williamson shared that Alpha HPA’s unique ability to commercially produce ultra-high purity aluminium nitrate – a key enabler for these coatings – sets the company apart globally. Combined with Alpha HPA’s low-carbon refining technology, the Ultra-Coat Process™ platform offers both performance and sustainability benefits to battery manufacturers.
With China leading regulatory change in the world’s largest EV market, Alpha HPA is well positioned to support the shift toward safer, more reliable battery technologies.
